If I put my iPhone in recovery/DFU mode, will I lose all of my data if I haven't backed it up?

I got the iOS beta, however I want to change back to iOS 7.1.1 due to minor bugs on the beta. I've seen tutorials of putting it into recovery mode and then applying the iOS 7 software to the iPhone. Once the phone is out of recovery mode, will it have all of my data still on it or will I have to plug it into iTunes and sync it? This may be a problem as the last time I synced my phone was when I was running iOS 8. SO, to sum it up, if I put my phone in recovery mode, will it make me loose all of my data?

I would back it up just in case something messed up when you were trying to change the software back but to answer your question when you put it in DFU mode it will not delete all your data

If you are backing up to the cloud or to your own PC you shouldn't have any trouble getting the data. You did backup before you installed a Beta iOS didn't you?

Once on iOS 7 you can restore to the latest iOS 7 backup. IOS 7 will not accept any backups made using iOS8 but luckily iTunes archives the old backups for you to use.

I should also note that DFU mode is not needed at all - at least when you register your UDID with a developer account as is required when installing any iOS betas. Simply shift/option click Restore in iTunes and select the iOS 7 firmware file. You can register your UDID to activate iOS 8 beta at http://ios5activations.com/

Is your UDID registered? A lot of people have reported problems like this when they run iOS 8 without registering their device's UDID with a developer account through a site like http://www.udid.in/. It's $5, and then you also don't have to worry about Apple disabling your device for running unreleased software.

I think backup can never be wrong.

  • Will iOS 7 delete all my pictures if I haven't backed up to iCloud? Hi um I have an iPhone 4s and I'm really scared because I just started downloading iOS 7 and I was reading articles about it and some of them said that it was important that I back up to iCloud before I download it, and I have over 2, 000 pictures on my device- my phone hasn't backed up to iCloud in weeks.
