IOS 7 update requires 3.1 GB storage on iPhone?

My question is, does it just need this to install, and then the space currently occupied by iOS will free up, or will it use that space PLUS an additional 3.1 GB?

My phone is only 16 GB and I already have trouble getting everything I need to fit on it, so I'm not going to download this update if it's going to occupy that much ADDITIONAL space.

I can't remember if the last software update I downloaded required additional space or not. I don't think I paid attention at that point.

Basically, here's my question summed up:

My phone is running on iOS 6. This is occupying x GB of hard drive space. The new iOS 7 download requires 3.1 GB. When the new download is finished, will the original x GB become freed up or will it be taken over by iOS 7?

I'm in the same boat. See the post below. 3.1GB is needed strictly for the installation process.

They propose updating via iTunes; however, I've tried that and it's not working. The update option continues to disappear from my App Store window. Looks like it's time to delete some big apps, update to iOS7, then reinstall the apps.

  • What if I Don't got no simcard for the Iphone 4 but it requires me to put one in?   • Texting app that requires no internet? So, i've got this friend. His parents blocked my number on his phone so we can't really talk anymore. Does anybody kno of a free texting app that doesn't require internet access? I have an andriod, not an iphone.
  • Not enough storage to update to ios 7 with iPhone 4? I have an iPhone 4 8G phone. I've deleted almost all my apps and pictures/music and I still do not have enough memory to download the update. Why is this update so large? I've seen some of my friends phones and the system doesn't seem a lot different then the weird design
