IPhone 3G stuck on Emergency screen?

I'm trying to fix my friends iPhone 3G as it is stuck on the emergency screen with the USB to iTunes logo. I have tried to connect it to iTunes but it comes up with "The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported". My friend's told me that it all happened when she updated it or something, not entirely sure. The other main problem is that we don't know the firmware version and I can't unlock it to check:/

I also remember using a program on my dads iMac that told me all sorts of information about my old iPod Touch (including firmware version) when I connected it through USB, but unfortunately I don't remember what the program's called as I deleted it a while back. (I vaguely remember there being a snow flake as the little logo and it has a name like the jailbreaking software 'redsn0w' or something like that)

I'm thinking I could unlock the phone if I jailbroke it, except I really need the firmware version. Any ideas how I could obtain the firmware version?

Lol I know what happened. Someone forgot the password, entered to many times that was wrong so it said that.

You can either take it to a sprint Verizon store? What ever Wi-Fi thing he has. Or her lol.

Or just shut the whole thing off then wait 5-10 minutes and turn it on.

Or plug it in to your computer and fix it from there.

I believe the program you are talking about is Sn0wBreeze but the highest that the iPhone 3G can go is iOS 4. I would suggest that you restore the phone by putting it into DFU mode and then plugging it into iTunes rather than trying to jailbreak it which can cause major issues with the device. I would also suggest that your friend look into Whited00r as a replacement for iOS and it comes pre-jailbroken and its a ton faster than iOS 4 on the 3G

YOU can also try and hold down the power button and the home button until the phone powers off and then take out the SIM card and then wait about five minutes. Put the SIM back in and then turn it back on.
