IPhone app that coaches running? Or how to improve running pace?

I'm searching for an iPhone app that will help me improve my running pace. I'm looking for an app that when you run, it tells you to run faster or slower according to the running pace you chose before starting to run! Or if you know another way to improve your running pace please tell me: P

Temple run?

Darn! I just wrote a really great answer and it got lost.

if you're just looking for an interval timer, I really researched this about 4 years ago. There are probably a lot of programs that came out since then but my favorite was "Interval Run". Its 2 bucks. It's pretty easy to program and it comes with a number of pre-set programs, too. It aslo has the option to alert you with a beep. Or a terse command like "run", or a verbose command like "prepare to run for 2 minutes in 3, 2, 1. "

If you're looking for an app that knows your pace you should re-think that for 2 reasons. First, GPS is really inaccurate to determine "instantaneous pace". A GPS is inherently accurate only to 14 feet. So at any given moment, it can have you ahead or behind by 14 feet - which really throws off your pace. Second, pace is not that good a metric because of hills.

A better metric is Heart Rate. And there are a number of apps that measure heart rate and can tell you when you are out of the "zone". All of these will require you to buy the app, a heart rate monitor strap and maybe even a dongle. With these expenses it might be better just to buy a GPS HRM watch - that's what I did - I got the gamin 305. And i run with an ipod nano for music. These two things are better than running with an iPhone.

Check out Jog Log Pro, RunMeter, iSmoothRun, iMapMyRun, and LogYourRun. They seem to be the most popular.
