Is 'it' used correctly in this sentence?

He removed his iPhone from his pocket and took photographs of the drawers, boxes, and knives. They then wiped everything off and it back into place.

Added (1). put it

It should be 'He' instead of they, and 'them' instead of 'it', if you are referring to the boxes and knives, however if you are only talking about him putting his iPhone back in his pocket, the sentence should read:
He removed his iPhone from his pocket and took photographs of the drawers, boxes, and knives. He then wiped everything off and put it back in his pocket.

They then wiped everything off and PUT it back into place

Yes, if you are talking about his pocket.

It is grammatically correct, but indeed feels awkward. Better might be: "They then wiped and replaced everything" OR "Then everything was wiped off and put back into position".

I assume that "they" refers to people (several) who have alreday been mentioned.

Adam is indeed tying himself up in knots. And not admitting the possibility of previously mentioned people being covered by "they".
