However, there are a number of add-on lens for the iPhone, none of which are zoom lens like the 18-55mm. Typically these lens are offered as a mild telephoto, a mild wide angle, and a macro. Most either clip on to the phone or have some kind of adapter to fit on the phone.
No. The only thing an app can do is provide what's called digital zoom. Digital zoom only crops the image, but it doesn't do anything to the lens. Therefore, you're left with a lower resolution image that will show more imperfections commonly found with iPhones such as much more visible noise.

These lenses work with the existing lens of your iPhone. Since you're adding a lot more elements (presumably plastic), the image quality will drop. By how much is not clear. However, the ability to get the shot usually out weighs the sharpness of the lens.
