My iPhone says that I have a text message but I don't?

My iPhone 4S has a notification that I have a text message but I don't. I have been searching the forums for an hour and I've tried everything from rebooting my phone, syncing it on iTunes, turning on and off my messages/emails, checking my voicemail, etc. I saw that I have to delete all of my text messages, however I don't want to do that. I do not know where the unread message is coming from and I have no desire to delete all of my text messages to do so. How can I get rid of this? I'm getting really annoyed.

Have you checked this: Settings>Messages>iMessage/Text Messages to check whether this is toggled to ON.
Also let your friends check this.
If you have to delete all of your text messages, you can backup your messages then delete all of them.

You, in fact, WILL have a "hidden" text somewhere. A person whom you texted, previously, might've just responded to you w/a "thumbs up" emoji, or given your text a "smile" icon. These will show up attached to the actual text you sent to that person last (like in the corner of that previous text). It took me FOREVER to figure this out. All other ways of rebooting my phone, etc. Still showed that I had a text I hadn't seen yet.

Thanks Olivia. It worked to get rid of the errant "1" if I toggled back and forth between turning off iMessage, and checking if the 1 was gone or not. Eventually it worked. No more 1.

  • Will my message be delivered if sent as text message on iphone? My friend said that she was having phone problems earlier today. My message was being sent as an imessage, but I guess she wasn't receiving everyone of them, just getting the notifications that they were sent to her but she couldn't read them. I then responded to her, but it was sent as a text message this time and i have gotten no response. I'm not as much concerned about her responding or not, I just want to know if she will receive the message.
  • Why could i have gotten a text message with no text box? Yesterday morning, I looked at my smart phone ( android) and I got a text from someone. I clicked on the contact's text and there was no message, no blank bubble, nothing. It just looked like one of us was getting ready to start a conversation but no message was sent. (Extra info: I may be wrong but I think this certain contact has an iphone.) What could cause this? I don't want to ask the person because it would be extremely awkward.
  • My iPhone says I have one unread message, but doesn't show anything? It says I have one unread message but when I click on it, it show nothing. Like none of my messages show up. Period. And after I look at a blank screen for a few minutes it just goes back to the home screen.
