If you aren't ready for the iPhone 6 or 6+ that was just released, I would say get the one that's closest to the next update AKA the iPhone 5S. T-Mobile still has a bunch of iPhone 5Ss and I think Verizon still has a few. Not sure about Sprint or AT&T.
If you would like latest iPhone, So, you should get iPhone 6. Otherwise iPhone 5s will be good.

You can probably get used to iphone by getting the 4s as it is much easier to handle and suitable for anyone under 18 and if your over 18 get the 5s hope this helps.
If your young then get the 4S since you will probably break it in less than a year, if your over 18 get the 5S it is a much better phone. Cheers.
Get the one that does what you want and costs no more than you'd like to pay.
Your question says nothing about either of these things.
I wouldn't recommend a 4S since it doesn't have LTE connectivity. If you're on Verizon you may not get XLTE, but you'd have to check with them. I don't know if the 4s is a world phone or not - you can check that on Verizon's site, along with user reviews of either phone.
Iv got the 5S and enjoy it. It's a reliable phone (sure, 5 months later). But it's not for everyone.
If your not going to get an iPhone 6, get the 5s.
If you have enough budget, the iPhone 5s is better.
