Should I buy the new iPhone or go for something else? Not sure about contracts and whatnot?

I've only ever had 4 Pre-Paid phones and only one of them was a smart phone (LG Optimus) and I'm curious about getting a new phone (New job & I'm moving out of my parents house) a few friends recommended I wait and get the iPhone 6 when it comes out, but I was wondering if I could get a second opinion or maybe another recommendation? I just want a phone that I can text on and have a good amount of music on. My iPod was stolen last month and I think it'd be nice to have both my texting and my music on one device instead of two. The other thing I'm concerned about is cell phone contracts, I've never had one and I'm worried I will get buried alive in little fees and whatnot. I'm a student and I don't want to have to live off top ramen because my iPhone demands $100 a month in extra fees, thanks for reading I look forward to seeing what you intelligent phone people have to say.

All my friends have iPhones, for some it's a personal choice, for other they are provided by their employers (which is a nice perk if you're a manager. Not worth the hassle of being a manager, though, to me.)

I just recently got a Motorola Moto X. It cost about half what an iPhone costs, but the screen looks just as good and it has about the same features--except you're not a slave to Apple.

The thing I hate about Apple in general is that they see their customers as a captive market. For instance, with any other MP3 player you just drag and drop content onto it, very simple, anyone can figure it out. But with an iPod you are forced to use iTunes, so they can make money selling you content. And if you don't want to BUY content, iTunes is a major Pain in the Patoot!

Check out Republic Wireless. They have a deal, unlimited voice/data/text for $25/mo! It works over Wi-Fi or the cell network, and they use the Sprint Network which apparently has plenty of excess capacity. I had an LG Optimus before, and I really liked it, but this thing just blows it out of the water! As with every other non-contract carrier, you gotta buy your own phone, but it pays for itself in a matter of a few months. I've had my Moto X for about a month now and I'm just super happy with it.

Of course the Moto X runs Android, so you're now a slave to Google. 8^< The phone has no SD card slot 'cos Google wants you to use Google Drive. But 16 gigs internal is plenty, and at least you can drag-and-drop content onto it.

I had Virgin Mobile with my Optimus, and they also had unlimited data for $25/mo, but it was a joke. You couldn't watch video, and even online audio podcasts would pause every minute or so. On the Moto X I watch Hulu and Netflix usually without a hitch (not that a 4" screen is ideal for video, but it shows you how much better it works. And it's 720p!)

We all are looking forward for iphone 6. Rumors say it will be come out in early September. So 2,3 weeks from now. I recommend you to wait until such time and collect some money. You will have music and the phone in one item.

I would not recommend getting an iPhone, because they are not only too expensive for their value, Android offers a lot more features for cheaper. Tracfone is a great network, they now offer android phones and a no contract plan for as low as $7 a month. However, you could purchase a phone not on the tracfone network and get FreedomPop, a FREE phone service.

Not an iPhone.
