What does the little circle (o) mean on my iPhone 4 next to my signal?

- What is this spinning circle next to the 3G icon on my iphone? And is this why I'm using so much data. I'm visting Seattle been here for 5 days now and that spinning circle keeps spinning. Got a text last night saying I have used 75% of my data and then this morning I got another text saying I have used 90% of my data and I have not been do a whole lot on the internet. But please my main question is what is that spinning circle next to the 3G icon on my iphone.
- What does this little icon mean? The little icon right above "Books" in the status bar thingy, it always appears when I'm backing up my iPhone, I've clicked it but I'm not sure what it does. Someone care to tell me?
- What does the minutes next to the iPhone signal mean on te Facebook chat app? When I'm on Facebook chat app the people who are on mobile have minutes next to their names as well as the iPod/ iPhone picture. It's misleading as you don't know if someone's currently on face book chat, does it mean how long ago they were active? So if this guy was constantly on 1 minute, does that mean he's online on his phone?
- What does the little circle mean on my Sprint IPhone 5? For the past few days I've had a little tiny circle in the top left hand corner of my IPhone 5 instead of the 3G. My phones been slow, doesn't connect to the internet and doesn't refresh. It's really bothering me. I've turned the IPhone off & on & that didn't help. I've tried connecting to Wi-Fi, going into my settings to fix it but nothing seems to work.
