A soft case. Hard cases are nice looking, but if you drop your phone, they break really easily. Soft cases make it harder for things like pebbles, dirt, etc., to harm your phone because it allows them to kind of "squish into" the case with out touching your phone. If you drop your phone a lot though, I recommend an otter box, even though they're bulky.

Soft cases are generally TPU or silicon. I would recommend never getting a complete silicon rubber case (they are cheap for a reason). They are very flimsy and come off very easily and make it difficult to get it in and out pockets. If you want a soft case, look for TPU material.

If you really want to protect your phone, I recommend a hybrid, which includes a two piece case; hard and soft (Note: some hybrids are all hard cases). The soft, silicon rubber, part is usually held together by the hard portion making it less flimsy and thus more protected.

For some hard core protection, you should look into the Otterbox defender cases or also the LifeProof case (water proof, shock proof, dust/dirt proof and even snow proof). But these are generally a lot more bulkier.

You need both, get a Speck case. They have a hard outer shell and a soft inside, it protects the phone any way you drop it, since its hard on the outside and soft inside, the case protects in from the impact of the floor if you drop it. I've had a speck case (the same one) for 2 years and i drop my phone the worst ways all the time and it doesn't even have a scratch. I highly recommend them. Make sure you get the hard outer shell, soft inner shell speck, cause they have different ones but that one is the best.
