When I take a picture of myself, I look so ugly compared to me in the mirror? - 1

When I film or take a picture of myself on my iPhones (internal) camera and look back at the video or picture I look totally different and I think I look ugly compared to how I look in the mirror. I like the way I look in the mirror and I think I'm a rather good looking lad but when I see these pictures and videos of my I look ugly and I'm like "WHAT?" I hate it and it's made me really self conscious because I want to look like how I look in the mirror!

How do I actually look?

Is how I see my self in the mirror really that different to how I see myself on pictures I take?

Is it just because I'm not used to seeing myself from that angle?

P.s. I take the pictures on my iPhone 5's internal camera (have done on the external as well)

When you look at your self in the mirror it's actually a reversed version of yourself, because of the way the beams of light reflect off the mirror.

It happens to everyone. The image you see in direct is virtual and the image you see in mirror is real and inverted. Human mind has a tendency of neglecting virtual image, so unconsciously you have affection towards the mirror image.

I forget where I saw this, but there was a psychological study that shows the average person looks in the mirror and finds himself/herself to be 20% more attractive than he/she really is. Anyway, I think it's a pretty normal sentiment. In the mirror I look great, but in photos I look ugly as f*ck. I think it has to do with the fact that a photo is "frozen in time" and we have no control of the image before us; we can't adjust our hair, or strike a different pose. What you see is what you get.

And Daniel also has a really valid point about the image being reversed.

The brain is a very strange organ, your residual self-image is that of your reflection which is reversed to how everyone else sees it. When ever you look in the mirror the picture you see and have grown accustomed to is the opposite of what everyone else sees however in pictures when this is corrected you see the "real" you but because it's different to your brains pre set image of you you look different and "ugly". When you see a photograph or picture of yourself your brain recognising it as you but not the "real" you as that image is reversed from how it usually sees it therefore there's a reaction or rejection relating to the picture. Also due to the fact that your face is not symmetrical, not only your hair style, but nose angle, cheek and chin shape etc. Are all reversed making you look weird to yourself

In addition to what's been said already, it's one of those bizarre things but some people are photogenic and some people aren't. I once went out with a girl and looking at pretty much every photo compared to her in real life you'd almost swear they were different women.
