The thing is if you buy a brand new sim free iphone 4s you are still looking at about 480 pounds brand new (http://www.finditforless.co.uk/search/iphone-4s-sim-free/) but then you get the safety of the warranty of being able to send it back if it breaks.
I would personally wait until the iphone 5 comes down a bit in price as they are silly money at the minute.
I suggest brand new from apple as you know exactly what you are getting

and referbished could work for a year then break
