Why do people keep saying Verizon doesn't use SIM cards?

Okay, everywhere I read- I see people posting about how Verizon doesn't deal with/use SIM cards. Why do people say that, when it's a flat out lie? If you look at an iPhone from Verizon, or a Galaxy S3 (I don't know if the S4 is the same) Are the SIM cards just there to take up space? Or am I missing something on why people say that Verizon doesn't make SIMs?

Added (1). Given the information below- Can you use a Verizon sim in a non-verizon phone that is unlocked, to put it on the VZW Network?

Until recently, most of their phones were CDMA which do not require SIM cards, but their newer phones do have them.

Verizon is a CDMA network, which does not use SIMs. However in the advent of LTE they have had to include them for those purposes. But again, in general use conditions Verizon phones do not require nor use SIM cards.

Voice calls and texts (SMS, MMS) on Verizon use CDMA technology which does not use SIM cards. Their legacy 3G cellular data network is EV-DO which also does not employ SIM cards.

However, the 4G LTE specification requires a SIM card so once Verizon started deploying LTE for their next generation cellular data network, they needed handsets with SIMs, starting with the iPhone 4S, Galaxy S3 and other smartphones in 2011.

For basic functionality, the SIM does not need to be present. You can still make calls, text, and use the slower EV-DO cellular data network if you remove the SIM from one of the newer Verizon smartphones.

Verizon will not activate unlocked phones that originated from a different carrier.

If you stuck a Verizon SIM in another unlocked phone, I doubt that LTE would even work. The various carriers have different wireless frequencies ("spectrum allocation" in industry parlance) and current cellular radio chips have a limited number of frequencies; an AT&T iPhone 5s will not work on Verizon's LTE network even if you plug in a valid Verizon SIM.
