Are 8 pin male to 30 pin female adapters supposed to work with speakers?

I automatically tried in with my sony speakers, and it began charging, but it didn't play any music from the speakers. Are these adapters just for charging an iPhone 5? I'm actually pretty upset because I've really wanted to play the music on my iPhone as opposed to my old, 8 GB iPod.

Added (1). Just kidding, those speaker links don't work.
They do as long as they are an apple manufactured product. Any 3rd party will only charge because they omit certain pieces. The original 30pin used resistors and the lightning one uses an ic that does the switching
