Are the days of mobile carriers coming to an end?

Just my opinion but I thought i'd get some insight. Here's the scoop, I work for MTS in Manitoba and I was thinking how much longer until mobile carriers get squeezed out of the equation? Why do I think this? Read on (I won't be long winded). So what most people don't know is that you can download a free app on an android or iphone called (textme), basically what it does is enable you to make unlimited texts internationally and is courteous enough to provide you with a local provincial area code phone number and the option to make phone calls over VOIP so long as you're connected to the internet. I've tested it, and it works perfectly! This is not an ad for the app, but does make me think if texting and calling is available right now for free via VOIP, and summarily Wi-Fi will be available everywhere for free (likely 5-7 years) why do people need carriers? Yes, I know they subsidize phones, but soon I believe manufacturers will provide this courtesy to their customers. You can already buy a high end Google handset off their website for 200 bucks.

Yes, I believe that someday all carriers will basically be apps that you can get on the market for free or cheap because technology is changing everyday. I believe that carriers won't disappear until about 20 years from now or even a little later because there are customers a.k.a. The older generation who don't like/know how to use updated technology although most people do keep up. There are still a lot of places that do not offer free Wi-Fi to customers and there are some places that don't have Wi-Fi at all.

Your assumption is based on the availability of free Wi-Fi everywhere. If you look back far enough there were predictions that electricity would be so cheap to produce that it would eventually become unmetered. You also assume that the mobile carriers who currently provide the texting infrastructure will continue to do so using the current model. Your supposition makes too many assumptions! Sure change will happen, but I'd gladly give you a $1000 bet that what you have predicted will not come to pass in the period you've mentioned!

Just looked at "textme" and international texts and calls are not free, you have to buy credits!
