Are we making enough?

Dad makes 85k before taxes. Mom doesn't work. 3 kids, one 16 one 13 and one 4. My dad already payed off his 70k college debt in 6 years, and his car. Are we making enough to afford things such as a vacation, a new iPhone every year, a new car etc?

You don't need a new phone and a new car, my new car is 40 years old

No, that's why your jobs are for.

$85K for a family of 4 is sufficient to live modestly. I don't think you can afford a vacation every year, and why in the world would you think you need a new phone every year?
It is crucial that people save as much as they can when they can. You never know what the future holds.

We've no way to know what the mortgage or monthly bills are. What savings are needed for the educational demands that lay ahead. How old your parents are and what their investment needs are for retirement. No one needs a new iPhone or car every year. That's silly.

No. That is a really modest income these days for a family your size. It is a tribute to him that he paid off his loans and car on that income. They have to budget and prioritize what they spend on at that income level.

That's funny! YOU, are MAKING NOTHING. You have a roof over your head, food in the pantry and your very own laptop - seems to me you have plenty (probably costing your parents $25K per year in shoes, electronics, doctor visits, lessons, etc). Unless you have a job, this is your parent's concern and at the very least, it's certainly not your place to broadcast your family's finances to the world. Little s#!t

Depends on what his monthly mortgage/rent payment is, and how much he has taken out for taxes. Health insurance isn't cheap, food isn't cheap, and he's probably (hopefully for you) putting money in an RRSP (or a 401K if you're in the US). Without looking at your finances (expenses detailed out on a monthly basis) it's impossible to know.

It's all about priorities. What do you value? What do you need… Not "want" but "Need" in order to have a good life?
We all have to make choices. Some of us make good ones and some of us make not-so-good ones.

Eh, I'll put it this way. If you're a teen assuming that your parents are lying when they say they can't afford things, you're out of luck. I don't see how your family even affords phones and cars to begin with, let alone high end ones.

For comparison, about 10 years ago, I made this much as a single person in DC. By the time I paid my mortgage, utilities, car payments, health insurance, HOA dues, etc. It was surprising how little was left. And this doesn't even include big ticket items like food, repairs and maintenance, clothing, gas, car insurance… And I could go on forever.

Your dad makes 85k each year before taxes? That is the key -- before! After the Federal and State Income Taxes come out of each of his monthly paychecks and he pays any additional taxes owning at the end of the year, he may only net 1/2 of his 85k gross income. In other words - a net yearly income of only about 43k a year.
That 43k has to be used throughout the year to pay the monthly mortgage, monthly utilities, property taxes, food and clothing for a family of 5, maintenance for your autos, medical expenses, and (hopefully) some left over for a savings account. Your dad doesn't net enough to afford to pay for a vacation, a new car, or a new iPhone every year. 85k SOUNDS like a great income; but actually, it's not!

  • Why did Apple stop making White iPhone 3GS? I've been looking to buy a new phone and I'm thinking about getting iPhone but I can only afford and iPhone 3GS and I was really hoping to get a White iPhone 3GS but AT&T doesn't have White iPhone 3GS. I'm assuming Apple stopped making them. Why did they stop making them?/
  • What additional cost may occur from making my iphone a personal hotspot? I turned on the personal hotspot option in settings on my iphone but it says additional costs may occur. Does that mean it costs money for me to connect my other devices or just if i exceed the amount of 3g i'm paying for.
  • My iPhone keeps making a funny noise? It's sort of lile a 'ping' sound effect, and it happens about 2-3 times a day but its never at the same times. Some days it doesn't even make the noise (RELIEF! Lol) It's so random, and I'm always terrified when it happens. I think it's trying to tell me it's overheatin or something, so I've sent it to my local Apple expert. I just want to know what other people think of it before I get it back.
