Buying an iPhone off of Craigslist?

My mom and I want to each buy an iPhone off of Craigslist. We want to do this because we don't need data anywhere and we can't afford that. We will just use Wi-Fi when we have it. We were planning on buying them locally in our area to be able to see the phones before we buy. Is this okay? Can we switch our numbers to the iPhone without paying for data?

You might be able to use them for Wi-Fi, but as soon as you switch your numbers to them, your phone company will force you to have data.

The other thing to pay attention to is which phone company the phone is made for. There are iPhones for AT&T, and for Sprint, and for Verizon. They don't mix-and-match, so for instance if you want to use an iPhone on AT&T it has to be an AT&T iPhone; a Verizon or Sprint one won't work.

Also, Craigslist is more likely to have stolen iPhones compared to eBay. A stolen iPhone probably can't be activated to work as a phone because its ID has been recorded as no longer valid.

NO! Never ever buy an iphone or any apple products off of craigslist or ebay! They are most likely broken or STOLEN and probably are locked and won't work. Go to an apple store or www.apple.com to buy an iphone. You can probably still buy the last version or buy a refurbished one cheap. Never ever buy electronics like apple products on untrusted sites like ebay and craigslist.

PS buy an IPOD touch NOT an Iphone. An ipod touch is exactly like an iphone it just doesn't have the phone built in. So when you are in Wi-Fi areas (or you can set up Wi-Fi in your house as well) you can use the ipod touch. Ipod touches are cheaper than iphones anyway. Buy direct from apple.com or at a trusted retail store that sells ipods.
