Explain 'a great deal riding'?
Apple has a great deal riding on its next iPhone, the product that yields more than half its revenue and helps shore up overall margins.
What does it mean by 'a great deal riding'?
They spend a ton of time and money designing the next iphone, so alot goes into it.
The expression is gambling slang. If you place a bet on something, then you "have some money riding on" whatever you bet on.
'a great deal riding' means that it is greatly dependent on something.
So in a baseball game and the last pitch is up and if the other team needs a home run to win, there's a 'great deal riding' on that pitch.
Or if you need an 100% on a test to get an A in a class then there's a 'great deal riding' on that test.
It means that it's success is important to the company. If the iphone is not successful then they stand a lot to lose from it's failure, because they have a lot invested in it.
It mean there are high stakes involved and this new product will either make them a lot of money and get them ahead of their competition or not.
