Yes, that's what I did. You just need a apple account/icloud account

I've tried it multiple times and it'll send and receive with the email account your apple account is with. Atleast in my case.

Not through the number… Since that would have been disconnected, but could through the Apple ID email on a Wi-Fi connection only.

When I call it says your call can't be completed as dialed no matter what phone I call from. When I text from my iPhone it appears that the text was sent and I don't get an error invalid message and the text doesn't turn red. Could this just mean that incoming calls are not working for this person?
