Can I get a phone plan on my Canadian phone when I move to the states or will I need to buy a new phone in the States?

I just bought a brand new Iphone 7 PLUS in Canada but in September I will be going to school in the states. My phone is unlocked but I still want to know wether or not I can put an amercan sim in it and it will work!

Since it is unlocked, yes that would be fine.

It'll work as long as the phone company you're buying from extends to Canada.

As long as your iPhone 7+ is unlocked (as you mentioned), you should be OK. All you will need is the necessary SIM card for the carrier you'll want to use & the services you want.

Prepaid services are fairly easy to set-up as you can get up & running in about 5 minutes… But generally don't offer international features. For unlimited talk + text with some data will generally run at least ~$35 / mo. However, higher priced plans (that typically have more high-speed data) can go up to ~$75 / mo. Some carriers allow you to freely change your plan on a monthly basis just by purchasing the necessary prepaid card. HOWEVER, you will need to purchase service cards roughly every 30 days (unless you purchase multi-month cards) if you do NOT choose to set up auto-renew. Canceling services is fairly easy as you just choose NOT to renew your service.

Postpaid services do take some work to set-up (as you typically will need to visit a carrier's store), but typically carry more services like international features (like international calling from the US & international roaming) & perks. You don't have to worry about purchasing service cards as you get billed for services every month, but the first bill will be higher than normal (as it'll be a partial month you used PLUS your next month). Canceling services are a bit harder as well, but since you own your phone… You can run without any commitments in terms of phones.

You will want to check network coverage with the carriers you're considering, but you may want to consider going with AT&T Prepaid as their plans beyond their minimum includes international calling AND international roaming with Canada (granted it does not exceed 50% of all your usage)… Making it the most accommodating for your transition (as you'll be able to use their service while in Canada in addition to call from the US at NO EXTRA CHARGE).

With Verizon, you'll have to go with their 10 GB (@ $60 / mo) or Unlimited (@ $75 / mo) to get free international calling to Canada. Otherwise, it'll cost you an extra $5 / month for that feature (which drops the per-minute rate from $0.54 / min to $0.00 / min.) & $5 / day for roaming (while in Canada).

Please be aware that this is only some quick research I've done with those carriers (as they're the most relevant for my area)… You could run with other carriers if you like, but I highly recommend doing your research to minimize potential headaches.

HOPE THIS HELPS!
