Can I get and Iphone 5 without a data plan?

I currently have a blackberry Torch with Virgin mobile. For my blackberry i use the internet with available Wi-Fi. If i purchase and iphone do i have too switch to a new plan or can i just use an iphone with available Wi-Fi like an ipod touch would?

Added (1). WITHOUT buying it strait from apple but rather from virgin

Yes you can but it will cost full price which is about 500+ apple store will sell you it or online.

Yes for $649-$849

Virgin Mobile is CDMA. You can't stick an iPhone 5 onto it, whether you get an unlocked iPhone from Apple or not. If you get the iPhone 5 factory unlocked, you can use any GSM network on it be it T-Mobile or whatever other GSM prepaid carrier you'd want.

Of course you can use the iPhone without a contract at all, you can just run it off Wi-Fi sure but you wouldn't be able to make standard calls (although there are apps with cheaper rates you can use for calling like TextNow, Pinger, TextPlus, etc.). All those apps run off Wi-Fi for calls. Although that'd be awfully costly (the 5 is $600+ without a contract). Might as well get the new iPod Touch instead.

Without buying it straight from Apple, you can't buy it from Virgin Mobile bc it doesn't offer the iPhone 5 at this point in time and probably won't for a while. It took a long time for VM to get the iPhone 4 as it is.
