There's a couple ways to get gems.
1) Clearing rocks, bushes, trees and all the other forest things in your village. They don't always give gems but they grow back so it's a pretty good way to get gems.
2) Completing quests/missions. Depending on the difficulty on the quest, it varies how many gems you get though not all quests give gems.
3) Buying gems with real money. If you open up the shop, and tap "Buy gems", or at least i think thats what it says (I don't play the game anymore) but when you open that up, you can buy gems with your real money.
