Computer is too old or over-used?

Hi, me and my mom are arguing about buying a new computer or fixing it. My computer is about 6 years old and I use it almost everyday. From time to time, It's very slowly going down. More laggier, more 'not responding's, and different stuff. I'm getting real tired of these. I don't even want to put the settings down for it to go faster. Now, when I turn on my computer and open some programs like Steam, they all do not respond. So I asked my mom to buy me a new computer because of this, and she said it's over-used. I said ''Maybe it's too old'', but still, she is PRETTY SURE that it's over-used. She doesn't even know anything about computers. All she does is do Facebook on her iPhone. If it's too over-used, then should we fix it? But I want a new computer, and I don't want to waste that fixing cost. We can use that for a computer and just add a bit more money. It's just too annoying. My friends have bought a new computer this year while me, I haven't. They have those kinda fast computers, while me, I lag. I just get jealous, and I'm a gamer, so please don't stop me from being jealous.

6 years old computer is pretty old in computer expectancy. If you really want to fix it, best way to start is open up the computer and dust (preferably with a dust can) everywhere in it. In worst case scenario, your computer could be infected with a virus since you have stated all the computer symptoms for viruses. Maybe check for them and kill them all. If above isn't any of the cases, then sorry my friend, it's time for a new computer.

I agree with the other Michael haha. I have a laptop that is 8 years old, and believe me i'm a techy kind of guy, and I have taken that laptop apart and dusted the whole thing, re-formatted the operating system so it's like brand new, upgraded the ram to its max size which is 1GB and still today, it does turn on and runs, but can only handle basic tasks, like internet browsing, music, videos, typing, but no online gaming, and yes my 8 year old laptop is slow compared to my newer laptops, and no there's not a virus on my old laptop.

It is a really old computer. You should probably just open the case and remove all the dust. After that buy some proscessor cooling gel and then remove your proscessor. Scrape all of the dried gel off. Put some of that on. After that put the proscessor on. Then, put the computer back together. After this you should back up all of your files. Then, go to Ubuntu.com. Follow there instructions to install there operating system. Then transfer your files on that computer.
