Consequences for filming in a cinema in Australia?

I want to know exactly what can be done against this specific scenario… One I have done myself. A movie has been released in Australia, but not yet around the world. I filmed parts of this movie with my iPhone and made various gifs out of them and put them on a website. I have been warned by the films production member in America. Do the laws apply worldwide and exactly what charges or power do they have against my actions…

That is copyright infringement. You can go to jail. Any country showing the film the copyright is good in. Piracy also could be charged.

Even though the producers are in the US, you have fringed Australian copywriter by filming this and posting it on the Internet. Charges and fines have occurred for this previously in Australia (125k if I remember, the parents of the child had to pay it and they had to sell their home if I recall correctly)… You are in serious trouble.

Absolutely, copyright laws apply worldwide. They are enforceable worldwide as well.
Strictly speaking you have breached their intellectual property rights by making an unlicensed recording. You have also used copyrighted permission without consent and without a valid excuse, which is illegal under the Copyright Act 1968.

Not only that, but Australia and America have copyright treaties with each other.

They can take you to court for copyright infringement. In Australia, the penalty for copyright infringement is usually about $62, 500 - and that fine is increased for converting the movies into digital form. Converting them into a GIF absolutely counts as a conversion into digital form. They can also sue for any reproduction or recommunication by you or on your behalf.

You MAY be covered by the fair use provisions in America, but you are NOT covered by the statutory exceptions in Australia.

  • What is a good cheap camera for filming? I'm going to start vlogging on YouTube this summer, since i have nothing better to do. But then i'm gonna need a good camera. I was thinking about a compact camera ofcourse, and i really want a nice quality so it will be watchable. My price range is 100 euro's.
  • Unlocking Iphone 4S - consequences? I want to by the 4S or the 5 (if I see a good deal) but I'll order it from abroad because its cheaper. The thing is some are locked to foreign companies such as O2, Vodaphone, etc. If I take my Iphone to someone to make this limitation disappear how will it affect the devise? Will I be able to access Itunes, download new apps, updates, etc?
  • Reporting iphone as lost, selling it, consequences? A friend of mine just bought the iphone 4s and wanted to know if she reported it as lost and sold it to someone who wanted to activate it, what would happen. She has insurance and was thinking she would get a new iphone, but what would happen to the one sold if it was activated at verizon? Would verizon realize it was the lost phone?
