Difference between LTE and 4G?

Okay I have an iPhone 5 and in my town I always get 4G. Well, I was out hiking yesterday a couple miles away from my town and I noticed I was getting LTE, for the first time ever. I'm guessing to get LTE you need to be close to the tower, which is why I don't ever get it in my town? But is it faster than 4G?

It is a faster form of 4G. "Normal" 4G is WiMax, which is slower than LTE (which is still 4G).
