Do I need glasses for a detached retina?

During my Junior year in High School (when I was about 16) a former friend of mine (emphasis on former) "accidentally" shot me in the eye with a BB gun. Don't get this confused w/ an airsoft-gun; these BB's were copper, not plastic.

He shot me point-blank at about the length of a two-car garage- possibly closer. I was taken to a retinal specialist who, from what I can remember, never proposed surgery or glasses at the time. He told me and my mother that I had a detached retina. It seemed all would heal with time.

I dealt with some sort of eyedrops that separated the lens from my eye or something of the sort which made my vision blurrier than usual. Before all of this happened, I had perfect vision and continued to for quite some time even after the incident.

Now, about 4 years later, my overall vision is still close to perfect. However, my left eye (the one that suffered from the BB) seems to have problems focusing objects at a distance. It's a very minor detail that I've noticed recently. I also read that flashing lights may be seen w/ a detached retina. Until reading this, I never noticed that I actually DO see flashing lights at times. I'm not sure if these are real objects that were flashing, or if they're symptoms of my detached retina. But the few times I recall seeing them, I don't recall anything that could've been near me that would flash like that. '

Despite my vision being almost perfect, I find myself getting extremely close to the computer screen or the screen on my iPhone without realizing it. My aunt noticed this and told me that I more than likely need glasses and that my vision would get progressively worse if I didn't acquire them.

Again, my vision is still near perfect, I seem to have issues focusing. Are glasses necessary? And will they spare my vision from getting worse in the long run?

With the trauma you experienced, you should be having annual eye exams. It is possibly that quite apart from your injury you are experiencing changes in your vision. Get an eye exam to find out. It would also be a good idea to forgive the guy who shot you.

It just sounds like you are getting a bit nearsighted in that eye.

Wearing or not wearing glasses has no effect on your vision getting any better or worse.

All glasses do is help you see better while you have them on… They don't change or fix or damage anything.

Your aunt is wrong… But most people believe that for some reason.

Glasses will probably help with the issues you are having, if you WANT help for it. If it bothers you, get glasses, if it doesn't bother you, then forget about them. Your vision is likely going to keep changing either way.

I have a feeling that you are confusing what they said was wrong.
if you had a detached retina they would have done surgery on it.
and why would they give you eye drops to "separate" your lens from the rest of your eye especially if you had a detached retina and not a problem with your lens?
i think you need to go to an eye doctor and get your facts straight cuz neither a detached retina nor lens problem will be healed over time.
its likely you do need glasses but it would not be to help a detached retina.
you probably need glasses cuz your eyes tend to change until you are 21.
