Do I Need To Unlock a Used IPhone 4s?

I bought an IPhone 4s from a friend of mine. Can I just put my SIM card into it right away or do I need to unlock it first even though the phone is the same provider as mine?

Added (1). I don't plan on ever changing providers and I don't want to spent money on unlocking.

I would recommend getting the iPhone unlocked by your friend before you buy it off him, so that in the future if you wish to change providers then you shouldn't have issues.

You won't have to unlock your phone if you are on the same carrier. Its likely that you can get your carrier to unlock it for free when the device is over 2 years old anyway, so if it works why try and change anything

If your friend can get it unlocked that would be my recommendation. Saves you a lot of trouble if you intend to sell the phone in the future.

Saying that, you do not need to unlock it if you are on the same provider.

Simple way to test it is to pop your sim in and see if that works.
