Essentially, there are two major kinds of phones regardless of brand -- Apple iPhone and Android. Only one company (Apple) makes iPhones but dozens of companies make Android phones that use Google's Android operating system software.

I have an iPhone.

Samsung and nokia (unless older windows phones or non smart phones) are android. Samsung did almost go with their own software but pretty much re-purposed that for the galaxy smartwatches.

There are 2 main operating systems for smartphones.iOS and Android. Almost every phone sold in the US will be one of these operating systems. Obviously, only iPhones run iOS (however, you can buy iPhone clones that customize the Android OS to look like iOS). Every other phone (almost) run Android.

For the record Samsung & Nokia both run Android.
