MAC addresses are locally significant only and are not seen off your local network. So even with no VPN your MAC address is not visible to hosts on remote networks, like the Internet.

AnchorFree's Hotspot Shield VPN for Mac is a custom internet security application for Mac users. In addition to protecting your web surfing sessions, it secures and protects your credit card information, passwords, downloads and instant messages from your ISP, snoopers, scammers, spammers and hackers. Hotspot Shield secures your data using HTTPS encryption, making it impossible for anyone to intercept or track your web activity. It anonymizes you online and allows you to browse the web in total privacy.
