Does an iphone do free calls? - 1

I heard that, unlike normal phones where you have to pay per month or pay as you go ect to call people, iphones let you video call people absolutely free, something called Facetime? Is this true? 0_o

There's a video calling service called FaceTime that works over the internet via a Wi-Fi connection. So if you were at home this would just use your home internet connection rather than your phone's network, thus costing you nothing.

The last couple of iPhones are now able to use FaceTime over 3G (this was previously not possible). Using FaceTime on 3G will consume your phone's contract's data allowance, and once you go over this allowance you will be charged extra money.

You can only make FaceTime calls to other iPhones or iPads, and not to people who have non-Apple phones. Although it is a fun feature, it is not really a replacement for phone calls and you probably wouldn't use it that much, when out in public for example.

You can see a difference between the last 3 iPhones here:

There are also text based messaging services (for iPhone and other phones), that work over the internet in the same way as well as some voice based services. Any of these online services operating over 3G will cost you money with your phone company though (if you go over your set monthly amount).

Hope the above makes sense and is of some help to you.

p.s. If you have an iPhone you will still need a contract or payg sim. It is still a phone at the end of the day, and no different to any other mobile phone in that respects.
