Does an iPhone require data to send group mms?

I have an iPhone on ios 6.1 and I seem to e missing parts of group texts, and even receiving them up to a day later. I recently updated from ios 5, and before I used to be able to use group messages using only Wi-Fi (I turn my 3G off at home and only use Wi-Fi). Now when I'm only on Wi-Fi I'm missing group messages, but when I turn my data on I will get tons of messages. Is this something new that requires data to use group messages?

Added (1). Why could I previously get group messages using only Wi-Fi but now I can't?

It requires that data be enabled on the phone to send mms messages, either group or single messages. MMS uses data. On verizon, it doesn't go against your data plan though. Go to settings, general, cellular, to make sure that data is enabled. Hope this helps!

I just recently got my iPhone 4 last month, so it has the most up to date iOS (5.1.1), however, it doesn't send Multimedia messages (pictures, recordings, and video).It has the camera icon to send them, but when the messages are in the process of being sent, it stops prematurely and says that the file could not be sent. I tried looking for answers to this question elsewhere, but this is the only case I've heard of. Any help is appreciated.
