Ok me and this guy are in 10th grade and we have been Facebook chatting, we're both in the same English class. Anyway he just got an iPhone and I have one so he was like: you know iPhone have free messaging using i messaging and I said ik. And then he said alright: p. Does he want me to ask for his number. Or what?
Yes, he wants you to ask his number. May be he is too shy to ask your number, but still wants to use his iPhone to message some one… Any one!

He's a man so its not really your job to start texting HIM. That could put you in a bad light if you do that.
If you WANT to get with him then give him signs that you like talking to him and wait for him to ask for your number.
