Does receiving iMessages on iPhones when not connected to Wi-Fi cost?

I know you can only send iMessages when connected to Wi-Fi. But what about when my friend sends me a iMessage when I'm out and about and not connected to Wi-Fi? Will this cost me in mobile data use? Or can they only send me a normal text when I'm out of Wi-Fi range?

It does charge you, I has to pay a pretty big bill because if that. Go into your setting and change it so imessanger only works on Wi-Fi and not on cellular

I'm pretty sure it won't be your data usage, but it counts as a text message. So it kinda depends on your plan. You have unlimited texting, then no charge. If your pay for messages, it's counts as one.

Yups, it will definitely cost u with the packet data usage. As iMessages is a facility that can be availed with internet access only. So you can ask your friends to text u with carrier charges instead when not in wi-fi range. That will not cost u at all.

You CAN send/receive iMessages when you're not on Wi-Fi as long as you're connected to another form of Internet (3G, 4G, LTE, etc). The most commonly used phone service providers like AT&T and Verizon bill you monthly based on a pre-determined data cap or lack thereof. Should you go over that data cap in one month, you will be charged extra.

For example, I have AT&T and am charged $15 for 200 megabytes of data per month. On Wi-Fi, no data goes toward my cap. While on 3G or 4G, data DOES go toward my cap. If I go over that 200Mb cap, I'll be charged an additional $15 for another 200Mb.

You shouldn't be worried about going over your cap just because of iMessages sent/received while not on Wi-Fi. Texts are relatively simple things and don't use much data. Things like Facebook and YouTube while not on Wi-Fi is what will get you.

Hope this helped.

  • Why is my Iphone not sending as Imessages and receiving iMessages from one person? I'm texting my wife and we both have iPhone's and she is getting the messages as an iMessage but the ones I'm sending her on my end show up at green. Sometime it will go as blue, get the little red exclamation point then send as regular SMS. I'm texting someone else too and she has an iPhone, and she is getting mine as regular iMessages and mine are sending as regular iMessages. Why aren't they sending to me wife as iMessages?
