Does restoring or updating your iPhone free up space?

I have an 8gb iPhone 4 and I didn't update it to iOS 7 yet. Will that help free up any space or not?

No. Updates need some breathing room to move around and update stuff. About 2gb's for 7.1 and close to that for 7.0. To free up space you need to move/backup your phone using iTunes and/or iCloud. You get 5gb FREE with iCloud anyway. Unload old pics, apps, and stuff to iTunes to make space. ITunes will tell you on the bar at the bottom how much space you have. It will even tell you how much space you need to update on the main screen if you ask, or go through Settings on the phone. After you've offloaded stuff, then update, then put stuff back.
See 'other' in iTunes on that bar at the bottom. That's all the 'junk' on your phone. Txts, any data you've put in any app, blah blah. Takes up a lot of space.
No endorsement, and don't work there. I use this paid version.

Happy cleaning, best luck.

  • Will updating my iPhone software use more space? I currently run on 7.0.4 and I could be running 8.4. I missed a few updates because I only use my phone for music. I have every megabyte devoted to music and I don't really see the point in downloading more software if it is going to take up valuable space on my phone. Would updating my software actually use more space, or would the new updates cause the software to become more compact? Some people tell me that the new software is significantly smaller but I seriously doubt it.
  • Will updating my iPhone apps affect my phone speed as how updating the Operating System (OS) will? Currently I'm using the iPhone 5s on iOS 8.3 I know if I were to update my phone to the latest OS I may notice some slowdown on my phone's performance, since it may not have the "muscle" to handle certain functions. Many apps now are optimised for iOS 9 and/or the 6th generation phones. Will my 5s' speed performance slow down if I update my apps? Will the app's performance slow down?
  • What is the difference between updating your iphone on iTunes or in your iphone? So I'm trying to update my iPhone 4S and I don't have enough storage so I've heard that you can update it on iTunes. What I don't get is what difference does it make downloading it from iTunes or from your iphone directly
