Does this constitute a redundancy?

I was surfing the web as I stumbled across this sentence.

"We're introducing the new iPhone 5"

"New" here was probably intended with the meaning of something that is recently discovered or introduced to the public, not the condition of the product.

But isn't iPhone 5 sufficient to convey the message? Because the usage of "introduce" hints away that the phone has not been announced before, "We're introducing the iPhone 5" should be just fine. Unless the author meant the newer version of iPhone 5, but he didn't. He was, in fact, writing about the iPhone 5 because I did read the article.

Mmm, not exactly redundant, possibly unnecessary. Still, it emphasizes the novelty of the product.

It doesn't grate on me or jump out at me as an incorrect or awkward construction.

There are four possibilities:

You could introduce the new iPhone 5
You could not introduce the new iPhone 5
You could introduce the old iPhone 5
You could not introduce the old iPhone 5

Whether the statement or situation are nonsense does not affect the diction. All are correct.

Could you not simply introduce the iPhone 5, you ask. Of course, but look at the choices above. Is this the new or the old iPhone 5? Of course "everybody" knows that it's new. That also does not affect the diction. 'New' is more like an intensifier than a statement of recency.

This is redundant: Introducing the new iPhone 5 telephone.

No; that's an established idiom of BizWorldInc.

"sufficiently conveying" the message isn't the intention there, esp the sufficiently" part; THEY.WANT. >>> IMPACT! <<<!

& sales and finally, >PROFIT!<

They could have said presenting, tho. They could have debated that for days, knowing the Ad Men types.

But I think introduction has a stronger suggestion of Newness!
