Found a dog in the street and took it home.don't know what to do

On my way home I found a yorkie dog running into the street… It was in a horrible area of town (ghetto) and traffic was bad so it was either I pick her up or she probably get run over. So I brought her home and she is very friendly but she acts scared around my dad almost like she has been abused. I'm not sure that's the case I'm just saying. She has really bad fleas but she is very sweet and loving. I called the shelter and I went on craigslist but didn't see any ads until I looked and saw one posted about a month and a half ago that matched the description and I'm pretty positive that its her. They said in the ad she got out of the fence but when I picked her up there's no way she could have survived that long on her own. That area is known for wild pit bulls tearing up small animals anyways and is really dangerous. They also wrote that they were new to the area and didn't know where the shelters were an they thought someone had her. I almost am thinking maybe she got lost again? They didn't put any contact info so I emailed the craigslist account and asked if they found their dog and they replied "no" and I said that I might have one that fit the description and they haven't replied! It's been days and they are writing off an iPhone so I know they read it. I don't know what to do. My family is getting attached to the dog and the dog is getting very attatched to us too. The last thing we need is a dog but I mean we will take it in I don't want her going back to a home that's bad and if they don't care. I'm trying to give them the benefit of doubt but they won't even reply to my message. I'm not a bad person I just want to do what's right. Any advice would be appreciated.

Put an add on craigslist and tell them you have a dog to good home and put a picture on there and say that she will act a little scared for a while and then she will get used to them

They sound like they don't care much sadly. She sounds like a lovely little dog.

Have you taken her to the vet yet? They should check her over and also scan her for a microchip to make sure you have the right owner and should be able to directly contact the owner via that. If the owners don't want her, I'd suggest offering to take her in (as in, away from them) then find a local animal shelter.

Have the fleas been treated yet? If not, again, the vet is good for very bad cases of fleas (which normal flea stuff might not be good with) but otherwise there are laods of good brands. You sound really caring so I'm sure you've got it sorted though.

Giving it to an animal rescue is better than trying to find a new home directly. A good animal rescue, like the SPCA, for example, will try and get her over her fear a bit and train her a bit, so she might benefit that way. Yorkshire terriers are popular pets but not too common in kennels, so she will almost certainly quickly be rehomed (unlike dogs such as staffies, who sadly take a long time to get rehomed or don't ever) and a reliable, well known and good rescue centre will have good vetting procedures to make sure the dog goes to the right home, and will be able to inspect the home and will also know the signs of a bad owner, which you and I would miss/find hard to spot as we aren't used to stuff like that. If you and your family feel, although you COULD handle a dog, you would struggle, then a rescue is the best idea.

Some rescues will allow you to foster dogs. This means they provide vet care and a lot of other care and stuff, so saving a lot of costs, and you aren't the permanent owner. If you enquire whether you could put the dog in the rescue centre, but foster it, so it remains at home but is paid for AND will also have a chance to be adopted for a more long term family, they might agree, as it means the dog and you can remain together, expenses are paid for and the dog will also have the chance of finding an adoptive family?

Calling the shelter was right, make sure you file a FOUND REPORT too if you did not already - this protects you so nobody later says you stole their dog.

Contact the person again that they should come and look at the dog otherwise you are taking it to the shelter.
YES it could have survived that long, Yorkies are terriers they are tough little dogs.

You might just take it to the shelter anyhow, and let the shelter adopt it out to a better family if the owners do not come for it first.
