Getting an iPhone from the guy I'm seeing?

I'm dating some guy my brother works with, and over the long weekend my phone broke. We're not boyfriend and girlfriend, we've gone on a few dates and get along pretty well. He's quite wealthy, and he's a little older than me (he's 30, I'm 23), but I'm not a gold digger or anything, just he offered to buy me a new phone.

I'm unsure about this, I have a lot of student loans to pay off, so I'm broke right now and I definitely need a phone, but if he gets me one and we break up or something, do I have to give it back to him, or are gifts not allowed to be taken back? He's spoken about suing someone over coming onto his property to deliver mail that was sent to their house by mistake, so I'm worried he might sue me if we break up for the gifts he's gotten me…

I really like this guy aside from the law suits he's filed on people, but I don't know what to do.

Don't take expensive gifts from people you aren't seriously dating. If you do take expensive gifts, and then break up, be the bigger person and return the item. Partly because it's ethically the right thing to do (and gives the giver the option to allow you to keep it), and partly because it keeps the giver from having an excuse to keep contacting you. That's my opinion.

If you want a phone, and don't have a lot of money, you can get cheap ones. Yes, it won't be the latest smartphone, but there are perfectly acceptable ones that are under $100. Heck, I think my first one was less than $20. And a pay-as-you-go, so I could control my costs.

Ask your mom and dad.

  • What is Sprint1x, and why am I just now seeing it? I've updated my iPhone 5 to ios 7 and I have always gotten LTE siginals mostly in my house, occasional 3G and something I've never seen which is Sprint 1x, it is super slow, slower than 3G. I know there's Sprint O connections which is basically useless. Why hadn't sprint shown this before? I'm getting 1x where I used to get 3G siginals.
  • Problem with seeing emojis on iPhone? I have the iPhone 5s. US.Cellular is my carrier. I can send emojis to other people and they can see them, but I can only see them if iMessage is working. I did not download an app, I went under settings, general, international, and selected emoji.
