Why hasn't iPhone gone to Quad HD just yet?

No seriously. I'm just wondering. I have an iPhone 7 Plus and I would have expected Quad HD instead of Quad LED but in reality it's just a gorgeous display. Why hasn't iPhone gone to Quad HD just yet? I love iPhones but I'm just wondering why iPhone hasn't made a Quad HD screen just yet!

Because the pixels would be so small there would be no point!

Simple! Because Apple hasn't designed a GPU that can yet handle that high of a resolution. For two because Apple is still stuck using older LCD screens. The iPhone 7 has worse battery life than the Galaxy S8 in part because its LCD screen is less energy efficient than the AMOLED display found on the Galaxy. And if it had a resolution like 2560x1440 much like the Galaxy S7 has, then it's energy efficiency would be even worse yet.

Also the lower resolution and the slower refresh rates of the iPhone 7 screen, is mainly why the iPhone can't handle VR like the Galaxy can. A pixel density of 500 PPi is basically needed to maintain a sharp enough image for VR as the screen is magnified by the VR goggles lenses and the fact that the screen is pressed up against your eyes.

For general viewing and every day cell phone use though if you're not doing VR than a higher pixel density isn't really needed. However Apple would have higher resolution regardless as it's a great marketing tool. But they can't until they get their new Samsung displays for the upcoming iPhone 8. (Aka… IPhone special edition.)

However according to the latest reports over the course of the last year, the new OLED display will still not match what's found in the Galaxy S8 technology wise. (Samsung doesn't sell their latest gen screens for competitive reasons.) Not to mention Apple started receiving their first shipments of OLED screens from Samsung last year during the Galaxy S7 era. And rumors point to a higher than 1080p screen, but a lower than 1440p display.

As you can see Apple doesn't make their own displays. They purchase them from 3rd party suppliers. All Apple does is call up their suppliers and tells them what they are looking for. They just go up to say LG and say, we want a 1080p LCD display at 5.5 inches. And LG tells them if they can make such a screen or not.

Of course making a 5.5 inch LCD at 1080p today is easy. The iPhone 7 displays are made by LG and Japan display corporation.

These same companies will make the screens for the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus. However the new iPhone 8 OLED display will be made entirely by Samsung, as Samsung has been perfecting this technology since 2009.
