How to know if this iphone 3gs is unlocked or stolen?

I bought a iphone off craigslist and i wanted to know how do i know if this iphone 3gs is unlocked or stolen

You can insert a sim card with different carrier, if it works then it is unlocked.

You can find out if it's unlocked by checking their baseband in settings/about. Search online the baseband you have and if they have ultrasn0w installed in cydia then it is unlocked.
