How to safely jailbreak my iPhone 3GS?

I have an iPhone 3GS, roughly 6.2 GB (677 MB available), version 5.1.1 and fully synced and backed up to my iTunes. I've never done anything to it, how do you recommend I can safely Jailbreak the phone without losing all my contacts etc?
