How do VerizonWireless upgrades work?

I went on my iPhone (the myverizon app), and it said that I was eligible for an upgrade a couple of months before my contact was up (I'm not sure why). Anyways, I was wondering, when I want to upgrade my phone, do I just go to the Verizon store, and pay like $200? Or will they make me pay $700 dollars since I'm technically breaking my contract? Also, can I trade my phone in so that I can save money on the phone I'm gonna buy?
