How does a two year contract work?

So currently my iPhone 5 is not turned on and it is Sprint. For one of my gifts I'm getting my phone turned on, but I would have to switch to AT&T. For a 5s it is free with a two year contract, I would get a 6/s but I don't wanna spend extra money. Is it actually a free iPhone with the two year contract or am I paying extra? I know if I fully bought the phone without it, it would end up being $449.99 and I would pay $15 dollars a month. How does this two year contract actually work with a free iPhone is what I really want to know.

It means that you are locked into a two year contract with the phone company. The plan will have a set price, say "$100". It means that over the course of 2 years, you owe them $2400.

Over 24 months, part of the monthly contract IS paying for the phone itself

  • T mobile user wants iphone 5, monthly price of two year contract? I'm a tmobile user that really wants to get the iphone 5.Is there any way to get the iphone 5 and still use tmobile, or will i be forced to open a new contract no matter what if i want the iphone 5? I'm apart of a tmobile family plan and it is only $30-40 a month, and I heard that the 2 year contract is $100+ a month.
  • My two year contract with Verizon ends next month? My brother and I both have iPhone 4 and we both pay 80 dollars a month which is way too expensive. My brother won't be renewing his contract… And I don't know what I'm gonna do:/ if he gets off the contract would I have to pay even more money every month?
  • My sprint two year contract? Yesterday i tried buying the new iphone 5 for 200 with the two year contract from sprint. But I couldnt because my contract doesn't end until next year in October. I've had my phone for a year already but I want to know if i cancel my contract now how much would it cost me? or if i end my contract in mid January how much would it cost me? there was also something about an upgrad which i don't understand. Please explain that.
  • Is a two year contract actually two years? I just recently got a new job that will allow me to splurge a little bit and finally upgrade my phone. I hope to switch from Straight talk over to AT&T so i don't have to continue paying $300+ when I need a new phone. The iphone 6 is about $100 with AT&T s two year contract, and then I'm eligible for an upgrade. Will I be held in that two year contract or would I be able to upgrade earlier to a more recent version? How much does it generally cost to upgrade early?
