How much does it cost to get an Iphone unlocked?

I want to switch from AT&T to Virgin Mobile b/c they now carry the iphone, and I know in order to keep the phone I have now I need to get it unlocked, how much will it cost?

Just go into an AT&T store and say they you will be leaving the country for a month or two and that you will need to unlock your phone so you can have a plan while abroad. Chances are if they are nice, and the policies have not become more strict, they will do it for free or cheap. Best of luck!

Your iPhone probably will NOT work on Virgin Mobile.AT&T and Virgin are two entirely different networks. Virgin uses Sprint's network, which is a CDMA network.AT&T is a GSM network. Only the iPhone 4S has both antennas, whereas all AT&T iPhone 4 and 3GS phone are exclusively GSM, as in will not work on Virgin. Even if you have an iPhone 4S, it still is unlikely you'll get it working on Virgin because it's already on the GSM antenna. You have to buy the phone directly from Virgin for the full price they offer it at. CDMA phones are specialized to their networks somehow, so you have to buy the phone from the carrier. If you had a Sprint iPhone 4 or 4S, maybe, just MAYBE, it would work out-but definitely not AT&T. If you have an iPhone 4S, ask Virgin if there's any way they can get it to work. Otherwise, you have to buy a new iPhone from Virgin.

You can still unlock your iPhone if you wish. If you're out of your two year contract, call AT&T and ask them to how to unlock your iPhone since you're off contract. They'll tell you how; they just recently started allowing iPhone owners to unlock if they're off contract. It's free if you're an AT&T customer, so no cost to unlocking it. Unless you're on contract, in which case you're looking at a termination fee to cancel your contract and unlock. It can be expensive depending on how far you are in your contract. Even if you unlock, though, you'll only get your unlocked iPhone to work on T-Mobile or another local GSM carrier, which is unlikely.AT&T and T-Mobile are really the only two, with the exception of TracFone, which uses a combination of GSM and CDMA, and your iPhone certainly won't work on that.
