How safe are.me domain websites?

I went on to a seemingly harmless one through my iphone. It wanted me to download something to view the full contents of the site so I backed out of it. Is it safe to just open a.me website?

.me just means its from montenegro, but never download and run anything, unless its something like flash and you know its from the adobe site. A web site can show you any content without the need to download anything. Its probably a virus, trojan, spyware or something similar.

I doubt it will even run on an iphone, it needs a pc.

WRONG! NO site is ever "safe", The domain name means nothing, All sites are a risk, and the Iphone is no more secure than any other device. The safety of the site will depend on who built it, and how secure they have made it. People make sites to deliberately infect machines or to gain access and hack them, or to steal all your personal information using ANY domain name there's. And any site can become insecure if some admin makes a mistake in coding or gives away enough information for hackers to guess the admin password. So a site you have used safely for years can be compromised. That is why you should always have good malware protection and should always use your brain when on line. Unless you know exactly WHAT is being installed do not allow it. Proper content viewing software. Should only be installed from official sites. If you do not know where it is coming from do not allow it.
