How to access the photos and files etc on a iphone i can't unlock because of screen damage?

My sister recently dropped her phone down the toilet FML. I had taken the phone apart and sprayed isopropyl alcohol on the components and scrubbed off with a soft toothbrush. This worked and the phone was back. She already had a new phone by then but she wanted pictures from a school trip to Sierra Leone doing voluntary work and had failed to put them onto the home Macbook before the phone started playing up. The phone was bricked for a while but i got some revive a phone solution, essentially just isopropyl alcohol but submerged for a while to ensure the tiny areas get treated. The phone is back on now and functioning except the digitizer will not recognise touch! I.e i can't unlock the phone. I have tried to open in itunes and also in iphoto but i says, as i predicted, you don't have permission (the phone is locked)

I have read around briefly about opening the phones contents in finder nothings coming up but i'm sure there must be a way to open the phone using terminal or something. I would highly prefer to not need any 3rd party software

Any help?

for your reference i'm using a 2013 macbook pro with OSX 10.9.3 and Itunes 11.2.2

the phone is a iphone 5 from the UK not sure on the memory

not sure how relevant that info is anyway

3rd party software would be the obvious choice to essentially 'hack' into the phone, but you can probably take it into the shop and bring a flash drive for them to transfer the pics. Though, being apple you will probably need to pay. I don't have any apple products so this is just a guess but do some research and i'm sure there will be something.
