How to activate Iphone 5c and use it as an Ipod Touch?

I bought a iphone 5c from ebay. It has a clean esn but the Sprint sim card that came with it is pin locked (because owner did not pay sprint phone bill). I'm not with Sprint and have no plans on switching carriers. The seller factory restored the phone, so it's asking me to insert a valid sim card in order to activate.

Can I use a friend's sprint nano sim card to activate the phone on itunes, then take it out, put it on airplane mode, and use the phone as an ipod with Wi-Fi? Or do I have to buy a new sprint nano sim card?

I think your confusing 2 separate things. You do t activate a phone on iTunes. You activate it with a cellular carrier. What happens when you try just using it as an iPod? Last year my daughters iPhone 5 stopped working and we activated her old Blackberry in its place. Then the iPhone started working again. For a week before I called. Verizon to activate, we used it as an iPod.
