How to add a service provider to an old iphone?

I have an old iPhone 4 my roommate gave me a few years ago. I've been using it as iPod and mini tablet around the house with Wi-Fi, but no cell service of any kind. It doesn't have a SIM card in it and I don't know what provider my friend had on it before. If I get one of these BYOP things http://www.bestbuy.com/...212&loc=1# will it work as a phone with calls and texts and still function as a iPod and mini tablet with my house's Wi-Fi?

First, you have to find out which iPhone 4 it is. Apple made two models, a CDMA one for Verizon and Sprint, and a GSM one for AT&T, T-Mobile and the rest of the world.

To check what phone you have, look at the back in the tiny letters. It will say "Model:"
If it is A1349, then it is a CDMA iPhone
If it is A1332, then it is a GSM iPhone

If it is a CDMA iPhone, I don't believe that this will work on it since the packaging says that it requires a CDMA LTE compatible device. The iPhone 4 doesn't support 4G LTE, so it most likely won't work.

Don't just buy the SIM that way. You could end up with the wrong kind or wrong size. Or you could discover the phone is not unlocked and can't be used with another service.

Go to the Tracfone site and enter the MEID (like serial number) of the phone to determine if it is compatible with Tracfone (use green Check Compatibility button):

Then, IF it is compatible, follow their instructions.
