How to buy a iPhone 5 without a contract?
I plan on getting my girlfriend a iPhone 5 for her birthday in November, but I only want to get her the phone. Is it possible I can buy her the phone, then she can set up a contract with AT&T by herself? Or do I have to set up a contract prior to getting the phone.

You can get one at apple store without a contract and pay it by its full amount.
I'm pretty sure you can buy the phone by itself, though you will have to pay full price for it. If one were to get it with a contract, chances are the phone will be at a discounted price. But yes, it is possible to just buy the phone alone.
Today is September 28, 2012, and there's no release date as of yet to be able to buy just the phone. So no, at this point in time you Can't buy just the iphone 5 without a contract.
