How to check if iPhone is stolen?
Okay, here's the deal. I'm interested on an iPhone 4s that I saw on craigslist. The person says that it isn't active but it is locked with Sprint.
The thing is that although he wrote that the phone is locked and not in use, it could be locked, but stolen, rendering it a useless iPod like phone. Now, is there a way I can know if this phone is stolen?
Is there a unique ID that the phone has that I can use to contact Sprint to find out if I can actually register the phone as mine?
Even if the phone is locked or stolen you can still use it as a phone. Do a full restore from itunes and the buy a 35 dollar "gevey" card to unlock it and use it with any other company
If the phone is a CDMA phone, it will have an ESN (electronic serial number). You can call sprint and check if the phone's ESN is marked as lost/stolen/unpaid.
If the phone is GSM (Using a SIM card), I'm not sure. There's a thing on Iphones called an IMEI. The IMEI may be able to get you info about the phone, but I'm not sure.
Yes, it is called the IMEI number. Check SETTINGS - ABOUT and look for the IMEI. Unfortunately unless Sprint keeps track of stolen (and it must be reported for them to know) phones you won't know. Even then Sprint may or may not tell you. I worked for AT&T a few years back and they wouldn't give out that info.
